Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are a common dental treatment used to restore tooth decay and protect teeth from further damage. At our dental practice, we understand the importance of providing you with accurate information about fillings so that you can make informed decisions about your oral health.

What are cavities?

Cavities, also known as tooth decay or caries, are a common problem that many people encounter. Caries is a process in which the tooth enamel, the hard protective outer layer of the tooth, is attacked by acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches in food, resulting in the formation of acids that can erode tooth enamel and eventually lead to cavities. Cavities start in the enamel but progressively extend into the dentin towards the tooth’s nerve.

How can you prevent cavities?

  • Good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and use dental floss, interdental brushes, or dental picks daily to remove plaque.
  • Healthy eating habits: Limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Instead, opt for foods that are rich in fiber and nutrients. Limit the number of eating and drinking occasions to a maximum of seven per day.
  • Incorporate sufficient calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D3 into your diet.
  • Regular dental visits: Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist so that any early signs of caries can be detected and treated.

What are dental fillings?

Dental fillings, also known as restorations, are used to remove damaged tooth material and restore the tooth with a durable material. This helps restore the function, shape, and aesthetics of the affected tooth. Dental fillings can be used to fill cavities, repair broken teeth, and even make cosmetic improvements.

What types of fillings are available?

There are several types of dental fillings to choose from, including composite fillings (white fillings), ceramic fillings, and gold fillings. Each type of filling has its own advantages and disadvantages, and your dentist can advise you on the most suitable type for your specific situation. In our practice, we consciously do not use amalgam fillings (silver-colored). These fillings can expand over time and cause cracks in the tooth enamel, which can lead to tooth fractures. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential negative effects of amalgam on health. Therefore, we recommend replacing amalgam fillings with white composite fillings.

What is the treatment process like?

The placement of a dental filling is generally a simple and painless procedure. When your dentist anticipates that your treatment may cause some discomfort, they may suggest anesthesia. It is your choice whether or not you want to be numbed during the procedure. If you choose anesthesia, a small injection will be given. The numbing effect of this injection will prevent you from feeling any pain. Your dentist will then remove the damaged tooth material and thoroughly clean the tooth. The filling will be carefully applied and shaped to fit your bite and tooth structure perfectly. After the filling has hardened, it will be finished and polished for a smooth and natural result.

What can you expect after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience some sensitivity, but this should subside within a few days. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to monitor and optimize the durability and health of your fillings. At our dental practice, we strive to provide high-quality fillings that combine durability and aesthetics.
