Treatment Tooth wear

What is tooth wear?

Tooth wear refers to the loss of tooth structure, which can occur on the enamel (outer layer of the tooth), dentin (underlying layer), or both. Tooth wear can result in sensitive teeth, discoloration, worn edges, and even tooth loss.

What are the causes?

There are several causes of tooth wear, including:

  • Acid erosion: Acidic foods and beverages, such as soda, citrus fruits, and sour candies, can gradually dissolve the enamel and cause wear.
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding) and clenching: Excessive grinding or clenching of the teeth can lead to abnormal wear. This may occur during the day or at night while you sleep.
  • Incorrect toothbrushing: Improper brushing techniques, such as brushing too hard or using a hard toothbrush, can damage the enamel and cause wear.

How can you protect your teeth?

It’s important to protect your teeth from further wear and maintain your oral health. Here are some tips to prevent tooth wear:

  • Limit acidic foods and beverages: Reduce your consumption of acidic foods and drinks, or rinse your mouth with water after consumption to neutralize the acidity.
  • Use a medium to soft toothbrush and proper brushing techniques: Brush your teeth without applying excessive pressure using a suitable toothbrush and proper brushing techniques.
  • Wear a mouthguard: If you experience grinding or clenching, your dentist may recommend a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth from wear while you sleep.
  • Regular check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. Your dentist can detect early signs of tooth wear and take appropriate measures if needed.
  • Discuss your symptoms: If you notice sensitive teeth, worn edges, or other signs of tooth wear, discuss them with your dentist. They can advise you on suitable treatments and preventive measures.
