Periodontology

Periodontology is the dental specialty that focuses on the health of the gums and surrounding tissues, known as the periodontium. The periodontium plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy dentition. Unfortunately, the periodontium can also be affected by a condition known as periodontitis.

What is periodontitis and how does it develop??

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissues caused by a bacterial infection. This infection occurs when plaque, a sticky layer of bacteria and food debris, accumulates around the teeth and gumline. If the plaque is not regularly and thoroughly removed through proper oral hygiene, the bacteria can multiply and penetrate deeper into the gum pockets.

Risk factors for periodontitis may include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition

Diagnosis and periodontal assessment

At our dental practice, we place great importance on early detection of periodontitis. During your regular check-ups, we will screen the gums for signs of periodontal problems using the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) score. If the gums show signs of periodontal issues, we will conduct further examinations and create a periodontal assessment. This involves carefully examining your gums and performing measurements to assess the health of your periodontium. Additionally, we may use X-rays to get a complete picture of your teeth and underlying bone.

Initial periodontal treatment

If periodontitis is diagnosed, we will develop a customized treatment plan for you. This plan usually includes an initial periodontal treatment, also known as “deep cleaning” or “scaling and root planing”. During this treatment, we thoroughly remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and beneath the gumline. This allows the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.
The initial periodontal treatment may require multiple sessions, depending on the severity of the periodontitis. During the treatment, we ensure your comfort and use local anesthesia if necessary.

Follow-up and maintenance

After the initial treatment, it is important to come back for regular follow-up appointments. This allows us to monitor the progress of your recovery and plan any further treatments if needed. We will closely monitor your oral health, take X-rays if necessary, and provide you with additional instructions for oral hygiene.

In complicated cases of periodontitis, it may be necessary to refer you to a periodontist, a specialist in periodontal treatments. We work closely with experienced periodontists to ensure you receive the best possible care.

At our dental practice, we are ready to support you in maintaining a healthy dentition and gum health. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about periodontitis or any other dental concerns. Our expert team is here to provide you with the best care you deserve.
